mornington.jpgIf the walls of Hotel Mornington could speak I am sure they would share with the guests some of the exciting scenes that has been taking place in this old building over the years.

But since this is not a fairytale and since walls cannot speak, it is the friendly barista in the hotel lounge who tells me the history of Hotel Mornington.

Before the 1930’s, when the building for the first time was used as a hotel, a variety of businesses took place in the old house. It has hosted dental clinics as well as car exhibitions. But from the very beginning the building was used as a theatre, which was called Teater Apollonia.

Today Hotel Mornington is renovated to top modern standard and any trace from the old days as a theatre is hard to find. With one exception. In the basement you will find big, airy rooms in which they, in the past, used to store stage set design. The high ceilings are kept just as they were in the old days, but today, instead of stage decor, you will find a health centre where guests can work out, enjoy massage, spa treatments, or relax in the sauna.

The hotel lounge is yet another characteristic of Hotel Mornington. This area is also a library with more than 4000 volumes, and it is easy to enjoy yourself in the British inspired atmosphere when sitting down for a drink.
The chilled atmosphere of the lounge is appreciated not only by the hotel guests. The lounge is apparently a popular place for journalists and artists when conducting interviews. Who knows, maybe the building still carries a sentiment from its past as a theatre which makes artists feel at home!
