Women, media and global divides
Last Updated (Tuesday, 01 April 2008 15:12) Written by Administrator Tuesday, 01 April 2008 15:06
Far from being a day to celebrate, the International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the women’s struggle for better conditions of living, work, participation and representation in the society. We have much to think and discuss about when it comes to women’s, media and global divides. Are global divides also gender divides? What is the role and contribution of media to attenuate these divides? Can the access of women to media help closing the gap that separates genders? Can women use the media as an arena to discuss their politic participation?
In line with these questions, the 26th Congress of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) presents and opportunity to discussion and interchange of ideas, thoughts and knowledge. The issues concerning women and media go beyond representation and include women’s access to media production and the possibilities for their voices to be heard in the media discourse. Events like the IAMCR conference, gathering prominent scholars and researchers, offer unpaired conditions not only for reflection within the academic community, but also to draw attention of the media and, in consequence, the international community to the issues concerning the struggles faced by women all over the world and their daily fight to overcome them.
Among many others, a work group addressing AIDS/HIV will be held during the conference, which will certainly contribute to de debate about the challenges posed by AIDS, media advocacy and the participation of women in the process. Coupled with that, themes as the use of media for campaigning and social action by women and the increased importance of alternative and new media as means to create awareness are hot topics to be debated in the conference. New, democratic and inclusive forums of interaction on the internet, local radios and TV channels are emerging everywhere in a phenomenon that is changing the face of the feminist movement.
Even though new media technologies are a helpful tool for the women’s movement there is still a long way to go. Especially in the developing nations, women are still in the weak end of trafficking and slavery chains. Media coverage can draw attention to their suffering; promote debate and foster political reaction and policy making. Above all, the work done during the conference will contribute to the debate on how media can play an active role in minimizing the global divides for women.
